Definitely not going to make this blog always about cornhole because there are more things to talk about. However, I do like reading what is going on in the cornhole world. It is a game that many people are passionate about and they have an infinite amount of ideas on where the game should be. My ideas are always right of course! I have been stricken with the presence of common sense and the 20/20 vision of hindsight. Some kind of superhero I tell you…. a gift from a higher being! Whatever…..
I do have a question that has been on my mind the past couple of years. What happened to the real cornhole pitcher? The one that cuts a 2×4 sheet of plywood in half, props each half onto a couple of cinder block spaced however far apart, sews corn into some duck canvas pillows, cracks open a cold beverage with his/her friend, and plays the game of cornhole outside on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
The players in the competitive realm have forgot or lost the essence of this game in my opinion. Today’s players (notice I didn’t say pitchers) think the game should be played in a controlled environment with controlled equipment. ”Championships” are played indoors! I have to laugh every time I read where somebody says the bags were junk or the boards bounced too much. Are you kidding me? The game used to be about figuring out the bounce of the boards or the break in period of the bags. It wasn’t about throwing stick side with an oil based resin fill. If you wanted to throw stick side in real cornhole, you accidently spilled a little beer on the bags!
There is something special about the game of cornhole and its roots…. the game that is played outdoors on handcrafted boards with hand sewn cornbags. It is a throwback game to what life used to be like before the world’s complexity. People used to go outside to relax. People used to make up games to play with their family and friends. People used to make things with their hands from the organic materials around them. It was simple and fun then.
Complexity, competitiveness, and capitalism caused the cancer of cornhole in my opinion. Just my opinion, that’s all……. and is it too late to go back to having fun?
